Raul scores on Real Madrid return

Image
Real Madrid legend Raul scored in front of a packed stadium as los Blancos won 5-0 in an emphatic victory over Al Sadd in the annual Trofeo Santiago Bernabeu. The 36-year-old rather appropriately started off the party, demonstrating his touch and technique had not deserted him by bringing down the ball expertly from an Angel Di Maria pass before firing a low shot into the back of the net. It was the sort of goal the club's supporters had come to expect from their greatest-ever goalscorer but they still showed their appreciation and awe at his ability. Minutes later, he hit the post but the crowd erupted, shouting for their hero to be given a national call-up. Iker Casillas gave him the armband while Cristano Ronaldo gave the striker his No.7 shirt in the first half as part of a fitting tribute for the all-time leading Champions League goalscorer before he switched teams at half-time to play for his current employers. Further goals were to come for

Villas-Boas unaware of Chelsea's pursuit of Willian

Image
The Blues lodged an improved offer for the Brazilian on Thursday, but the Spurs boss is keen for the transfer speculation to not distract from an emphatic win in the Europa League Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas says he is unaware of Chelsea's late swoop for Anzhi Makhachkala attacker Willian. The Brazil international underwent a medical at the White Hart Lane club on Wednesday ahead of €35 million transfer only for their London rivals to lodged an improved offer of €37m on Thursday. However, Villas-Boas said he had no knowledge of any potential offer from Chelsea, insisting his sole focus was on Tottenham's 5-0 win over Dinamo Tbilisi in the Europa League. "We were just involved in a game so unfortunately I can't give you further information," the Portuguese told reporters. "I confirmed our interest in the player. Everything is possible, but I'm not aware of the circumstances because of our involvem

Suarez denies claims he will stay at Liverpool

Image
The Uruguay international had been quoted as saying that he has decided to remain at Anfield and that he will sign a new contract, but he has now rubbished the suggestion Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has denied telling a Uruguayan newspaper that he will stay at Anfield. Reports emerged from El Observer on Wednesday that Suarez had said the "affection" of the club's fans had convinced him to abandon plans to leave. It would have represented a remarkable U-turn for the striker, who repeatedly stated his intention to leave Merseyside throughout summer and publicly welcomed interest from Arsenal. But, speaking curtly to journalists following Uruguay's 4-2 win over Japan, Suarez rubbished reports that he has had a change of heart: "I didn't say it."

Crystal Palace sign Chamakh from Arsenal

Image
The 29-year-old failed to make a single Premier League appearance for the Gunners last season, and now becomes Ian Holloway's seventh signing of the summer on a one-year deal Crystal Palace have completed the signing of Arsenal striker Marouane Chamakh on a one-year deal. The striker becomes the newly promoted side's seventh arrival of the summer following Jose Campana, Stephen Dobbie, Dwight Gayle, Elliot Grandin, Kevin Phillips and Jerome Thomas. Chamakh, who willl wear the No.29 shirt, had been out of favour at the Emirates Stadium and joined West Ham on a six-month loan in January but failed to score in three appearances. The Morrocan will now compete with the likes of fellow new signings Phillips and Dobbie for first-team opportunities this season. The 29-year-old could make his Palace debut against Arsenal's local rivals Tottenham in the club's Premier League season opener on August 18.

Liverpool have rejected Barcelona bid for Agger, says Agent

Image
The Dane, who was heavily linked with Manchester City last summer, is now attracting firm interest from the Liga champions, but the Reds are determined to keep their man Liverpool have rejected an offer from Barcelona for defender Daniel Agger, according to the player's agent. Barcelona have been linked with several English Premier League defenders in the off-season, and have submitted a bid of  €25 million for Chelsea centre-back David Luiz. Chelsea have made it clear that the Liga champions are wasting their time, and now Agger's agent, Per Steffensen, has revealed they have been thwarted again. "We are aware that Barcelona have made an offer for Daniel that Liverpool have rejected," he told reporters. "Daniel has a contract with Liverpool for the next three years and it would be up to the clubs to agree a fee for his transfer in order for that to change." The Reds appear determined to keep the Denmark international, who has

Juventus must fight to improve, says Chiellini

Image
Giorgio Chiellini has called on his Juventus team-mates to battle even harder this season if they are to challenge for silverware. The reigning Serie A champions have thus far endured a miserable pre-season, including a 3-1 defeat to LA Galaxy that prompted coach Antonio Conte to question the work ethic of his players. Chiellini has backed his boss's sentiments, urging his fellow Bianconeri stars to work hard both on and off the pitch in order to defend their domestic crown and mount a challenge in Europe. "Conte is correct - talent needs to be nurtured on a daily basis with hard work,” the 28-year-old told Tuttosport . “We know that you can only achieve certain targets by working. And we want to affirm our place in Italy and improve in Europe. “Last season we beat the holders in Chelsea, dominating our home game with great authority in the Champions League. Obviously, though, when you play the likes of Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, you have

Fernando Hierro: Mourinho had great power at Madrid

Image
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho enjoyed a huge amount of power while at Real Madrid, former Spain international Fernando Hierro has claimed. The Portuguese coach endured a turbulent relationship with his squad in his final season in the Spanish capital, culminating in a high-profile falling-out with club captain Iker Casillas, and former defender Hierro suggests the 50-year-old's sway at Santiago Bernabeu may have contributed to such disputes. "Every club is different and Madrid is even more so," the 45-year-old told Fifa.com . "Madrid is a club where you have to win and it’s a place that can wear you down – where people have a different way of thinking. "If you were to ask me to look at the last 20 years in Madrid’s history and say which coach has had the most decision-making power at the club, I’d say there’s no doubt he [Mourinho] is the one. "If you ask him though, perhaps he’d say he didn’t have as much authority as he’d have

Wigan 0-2 Manchester United:Van Persie double seals first trophy for Moyes

Image
Van Persie opened the scoring in the sixth minute with a brilliant header into the bottom corner before sealing the victory in the second half with a deflected strike. United were far from convincing against the FA Cup holders - now playing in the Championship - but Moyes will be relieved to have successfully won the trophy after leading his side out at Wembley for the first time. Sir Alex Ferguson either won or shared the Community Shield nine times and it would have been a welcome relief for Moyes to focus on matters on the pitch following an unsettling summer of transfer speculation. The Scot raised a few eyebrows before kick-off as he said that Wayne Rooney will feature for England against Scotland on Wednesday but suggested that the wantaway striker will not play when United start their title defence against Swansea City.

Image
AC Milan striker Mario Balotelli has been included in the Italy squad to face Argentina in a friendly match Wednesday despite having a slight injury. Balotelli sustained a calf injury during AC Milan's preseason tour in the United States but further tests have shown the problem is not as serious as first feared and the forward has been included in Italy's 27-man squad on Friday. Fellow striker Pablo Osvaldo returns after being kicked off the squad for the Confederations Cup for insulting his club coach at Roma - a breach of Italy coach Cesare Prandelli's strict code of ethics. Osvaldo is one of seven players included who did not play in the June tournament, in which Italy finished third. Napoli forward Lorenzo Insigne, Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti and Roma's Alessandro Florenzi have been called up following good performances in the Under-21 European Championship. Sampdoria's Lorenzo De Silvestri, who has not featured for

Suarez exit is 'practically impossible'

The 60-year-old believes the player owes Liverpool for the support they have given him during his controversies since he joined in January 2011 Liverpool’s want-away striker Luis Suarez owes the club and should stay at Anfield for another season, according to former player and manager Graeme Souness. Suarez has been the subject of two bids from rivals Arsenal over the summer but owner John W. Henry reiterated the stance that the Uruguay striker is not for sale on Friday. The 26-year-old claims he was promised he could depart for a Champions League club but Souness believes he should show loyalty after the club defended him during incidents that put the club's reputation into disrepute. "I think he does [owe Liverpool] and everyone in their correct mind would see it like that," Souness told Sky Sports News. "I think back to the t-shirts at Wigan when he got himself in real bother and the [Branislav] Ivanovic situation last season - the board

Barcelona bid €25 million for David Luiz

Image
Barcelona have stepped up their search for a new centre-back by making a €25 million bid for Chelsea defender David Luiz. Barca set their sights on Paris Saint-Germain defender Thiago Silva earlier this summer as a long-term replacement for captain Carles Puyol, but have been frustrated in their attempts to sign the Brazil captain and also missed out on his international team-mate Marquinhos, who joined PSG from Roma in July for €35m. Sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta then turned his attentions to another Brazilian as Barca looked set to bid for Luiz late last month, but all transfer plans were placed on hold as coach Tito Vilanova departed to continue his cancer treatment and new man Gerardo Martino was installed at Camp Nou. Martino has said he is happy with Barca's current squad, but Puyol is still several weeks away from full fitness and has been plagued by knee problems over the last two years.

Mourinho's Madrid reunion falls flat as Ronaldo clinches cup for los Blancos

Image
Real Madrid have won the International Champions Cup thanks to a 3-1 victory over Chelsea in the final at the Sun Life Stadium in Miami on Wednesday. Marcelo opened the scoring within the first 15 minutes following a strong start from the Spansh side, only for Ramires to restore parity within moments with a cool finish. But Ronaldo soon took matters into his own hands, blasting an exquisite free-kick home after half an hour, before heading home the clincher early in the second half. And there was simply no way back for Chelsea after that, as Madrid took the sting out of the game in the time that remained to condemn Jose Mourinho to defeat against his former team. The signs were ominous from the very start as Madrid were quick off the blocks, with their first sight on goal coming after only three minutes, when Luka Modric released Karim Benzema down the left for a shot that tested Petr Cech at his near post. And after a series of warnings from Madrid,

Mourinho ready for Real match-up...

Image
Jose Mourinho has a golden opportunity to make a point to Real Madrid when the Chelsea manager faces his old club in Miami on Wednesday. Mourinho will go head to head with Madrid in the final of the International Champions Cup just three months after his acrimonious departure from the Spanish giants. After feeling unloved for much of his time in Madrid, the Portuguese coach is enjoying his second spell at Chelsea, where he is treated with total respect following his Premier League title triumphs in 2005 and 2006. The hero worship that follows his every move in the Premier League is a far cry from the hostile reaction to his presence in Spain. By the time he departed Madrid, Mourinho had made numerous enemies among the squad, with his decision to drop iconic goalkeeper Iker Casillas an especially sore point, as well as falling out with some of the club's hierarchy, while fans jeered the manager in the final weeks of last seas

Mourinho praises hard-working Moses as new season is about to kick off...

Image
The Nigerian international was thought to be surplus to requirements but is gradually worming himself into the coach’s plan As Victor Moses came on for Chelsea in the second half against AC Milan on Sunday, he knew he would have to do much more to convince Jose Mourinho of his abilities and he went about it the right way. "Where can I fit all the players in? I hope to play 60 matches,'' Mourinho told the Daily Star . Moses came on in the second half while against Inter, he started from the beginning. "So we will use a rotation of players that's for sure." Moses chose to stay away from the Confederations Cup to make sure he was in a healthy state by the time the pre-season would start and he has been electric for the Uefa Europa League champions. Against Inter Milan, he was the tormentor-in-chief where he assisted the two goals and against AC Milan, he provided another assist and a sterling display. Mourin

Switzerland international Xherdan Shaqiri opened the scoring after 18 minutes before Muller bagged his first in the 45th minute. And the German claimed his hat-trick in the first 20 minutes of the second half with two more goals before Dutchman Arjen Robben put the finishing touches on the big win with a late strike. "We’re satisfied with the 5-0 result and I'm delighted I scored a couple of goals," said Muller after the match. "We're in good shape and heading in the right direction.” Coach Pep Guardiola also expressed his satisfaction with the result after Bundesliga sides Werder Bremen, Borussia Monchengladbach, Nurnbe

Mourinho: Madrid is all about 'politics'

Image
The Portuguese has hit out at his former club by claiming there was not enough emphasis on football Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho has slammed the "politics" surrounding Real Madrid for bringing his tenure at the club to an end. The 50-year-old was shown the door after a desperately disappointing final season that saw los Blancos surrender their Liga crown to Barcelona and lose the Copa del Rey final to Atletico Madrid. Mourinho also became embroiled in high-profile public spats with goalkeeper Iker Casillas and defender Pepe as his Madrid empire began to crumble, and the Portuguese says there was not enough focus on football in the Spanish capital. "Madrid is a special club. It is not just a club. Madrid is politics. Madrid is not about football, Madrid is not about sport, but about many [other] things around," he revealed to ESPN. "In the second year [on the bench], we won the championship. We were the best team in Spa

Inter poised for €300 million investment

Image
The Nerazzurri are locked in negotiations with a wealthy investor as they bid to tap into new revenue streams and compete with Europe's biggest spenders Massimo Moratti is set to sell a 70 percent stake in Inter to Indonesian business magnate Erick Thohir for a reported €300 million. The Nerazzurri president has been locked in talks as the club looks to tap into new revenue streams and compete with the financial might of some of Europe's most powerful sides. The development comes in spite of former president Ernesto Pellegrini's warning that 'the Indonesian is only interested in business', but Moratti is adamant the sale will open new markets to the San Siro outfit. "I am acting in the interest of fans. Inter can then be managed in a new, modern way. This is not about the club's survival, but a matter of innovation," Moratti said to Gazzetta dello Sport .

Roma must offer deal, says Totti

Image
The 36-year-old is growing frustrated at the lack of progress on a possible new contract, while urging Daniele De Rossi to stay with the club Francesco Totti has told Roma to offer him a new deal in a bid to end any uncertainty over his future. The Giallorossi captain presented the club’s new kit to fans earlier this week, calling it ‘the last in a long line’ for him, with his contract set to expire this summer. But while he insists his comments were not to be taken seriously, the 36-year-old has urged the club to move swiftly in extending his current deal. “That was a joke, almost a game,” he told ESPN . “This is the last year of my contract, which is due to expire. “I have nothing against the club, but if I had a two or three year contract, I would not have said those words.”

Bale fee would be a joke "say" Arsene Wenger

Image
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger claims Real Madrid's bid to sign Gareth Bale from Tottenham for around £85 million would make a mockery of Uefa's Financial Fair Play rules. Real are reported to be willing to pay a world record fee, shattering the previous £80 million mark the Spanish giants paid for Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009, to lure Wales winger Bale from White Hart Lane. But Wenger feels such a huge outlay would go completely against the new regulations from European football's governing body, which are aimed at making sure all clubs balance the books, while also curtailing the massive spending of teams like Manchester City and Paris  Saint German who have been taken over by wealthy Middle East-based owners. "It makes a joke of it. It's quite amazing that in the year where the Financial Fair Play comes in, the football world has gone completely crazy," Wenger said on Friday. "You wonder what kind of impact and effe

Goetze back in training after injury

Image
Midfielder Mario Goetze trained with his new Bayern Munich teammates for the first time on Friday following a muscle injury that had kept him out of action since late last season. The 21-year-old Germany international, poached from Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund for 37 million euros in a high-profile transfer, had missed the end of last season including  Dortmund's Champions League final defeat by Bayern. "I am happy to finally train with the team," Goetze told reporters, before signing dozens of autographs for Bayern fans. "I could not do too much today as it was not a long session." Goetze agreed to the deal in April, on the eve of Dortmund's semifinal first leg over Real Madrid, triggering angry reactions by Dortmund fans, furious at a player who had joined the Ruhr Valley team as an eight-year-old. An injury in the second leg ruled him out of any more games while also avoiding an awkward Champions League final clash agai
